Help Me, Help You

Manual therapy can be effective in treating pain and restricted range of motion caused by soft tissue dysfunction. Manual therapy can help increase range of motion, reduce inflammation, and jumpstart your body’s healing/recovery process.

HOWEVER…

If your lifestyle contributes to chronic inflammation in your body, the effectiveness of your treatment might be impacted. Your body is already fighting the chronic infection and may be unable to handle additional stress.

Here are some changes that you can make to increase the effectiveness of manual therapy, as well as have a positive impact on your health:

  • Eliminate added sugar in your diet - eating sugar leads to rapid changes in blood glucose and insulin levels. Research suggests that sugar is proinflammatory and could activate your immune system (to deal with the inflammation)

  • Eliminate seed and vegetable oils - these oils are high in omega-6 fatty acids, which are proinflammatory

  • Increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids - eat cold-water fatty fish (use the SMASH acronym to remind you of these fish - Salmon, Mackerel, Anchovies, Sardines, and Herring)

  • Get adequate quality sleep each night - this tip isn’t just about inflammation, but overall health and your body’s ability to recover and heal from injury

  • Get adequate sunshine - this will help with sleep (morning sun exposure helps with sleep later that day). Also, sunlight exposure will allow the body to manufacture vitamin D, which has been shown to be deficient in those with chronic inflammation

These changes might help make manual therapy more effective, but they will likely improve your overall health - which is my goal:
